Water Treatment
London
London has some of the hardest water in the UK (260–320+ ppm). Limescale damages boilers, heat pumps, cylinders and pipework — reducing efficiency by up to 12% and voiding manufacturer warranties. We specify and install water softeners, scale inhibitors, whole-house filtration and smart leak detection.
What Water Treatment Costs
One-time installation that protects every heating and plumbing component in your home for 10–20 years.
Water Softener
Harvey, BWT or Kinetico twin-tank softener. Removes 100% of limescale. Supply + install £800–2,500. Salt tablets ~£4/month. 10–20 year lifespan. Protects boiler, heat pump, cylinder, taps, shower heads.
Scale Inhibitor
Electronic, magnetic or TAC system. Reduces scale without removing minerals. Supply + install £150–800. Zero running cost (electronic/magnetic) or ~£30/yr cartridge (TAC). Ideal for budget-conscious protection.
Whole-House Filtration
Sediment + carbon filtration for cleaner water throughout the home. Supply + install £500–1,500. Filter replacement every 6–12 months (~£30–60). Removes chlorine, sediment, rust particles.
Smart Leak Detection
Flo by Moen, Phyn Plus or Leakbot. Automatic shutoff on leak detection. Supply + install £250–600. Insurance discounts of 5–15%. Prevents catastrophic water damage worth thousands.
Why Water Treatment Matters in London
Limescale Destroys Efficiency
Just 1mm of limescale reduces heat transfer efficiency by up to 12%. Your boiler or heat pump works harder, burns more fuel, and wears out faster. A £1,200 softener protects an £11,000 heat pump investment.
Manufacturer Warranties Require It
Most heat pump and boiler manufacturers require scale protection in hard water areas to validate warranties. MCS MIS 3005 mandates a water quality assessment before heat pump installation. No softener = no warranty claim.
Building Regulations Part L
Part L requires scale protection where mains water hardness exceeds 200 ppm CaCO₃. Most of London is 260–320+ ppm. This is not optional for new installations — it's a regulatory requirement.
Protects Everything
Soft water extends the life of boilers, heat pumps, cylinders, radiators, underfloor heating pipework, taps, shower heads, washing machines and dishwashers. It also means softer skin, cleaner laundry and no limescale on surfaces.
Brands We Specify & Install
We work with the three most trusted water treatment brands in the UK heating industry.
Harvey Water Softeners
UK market leader. Twin-tank non-electric design — works during power cuts. Compact under-sink fit. 10-year warranty. Block salt or tablet options. The default choice for most London installations.
BWT (Best Water Technology)
European leader. Combined softener + filtration units available. Perlex salt tablets. Smart connectivity on premium models. Strong trade support and training programme.
Kinetico
Premium non-electric twin-tank systems. Ideal for larger homes with high water demand. No electricity required — powered by water flow. Exceptional build quality and 10-year warranty.
Bundles Naturally With Our Other Services
Water treatment is a natural add-on to almost every M&E package we deliver.
Heat Pump Installation
MCS requires water quality assessment. Softener + scale inhibitor specified as standard with every ASHP/GSHP install. Protects the heat exchanger and maintains COP efficiency.
Boiler Installation
Magnetic filter + chemical inhibitor + softener = maximum boiler life. Most manufacturer warranties in hard water areas require scale protection.
Bathroom Refurbishment
Soft water = no limescale on taps, shower screens and tiles. Add a Quooker instant hot tap and leak detection for the complete water package.
Full House Refurbishment
Whole-house softener + filtration + leak detection installed during first fix. One visit, one coordination point, protected for 20 years.
Water Treatment FAQs
Do I really need a water softener in London?
Yes. London's water hardness is 260–320+ ppm — well above the 200 ppm threshold where Building Regulations Part L requires scale protection. Without treatment, limescale will reduce your heating system's efficiency by up to 12% and may void manufacturer warranties on heat pumps, boilers and cylinders.
How much does a water softener cost to run?
Running costs are minimal: salt tablets cost approximately £4 per month for a typical household. Non-electric softeners (Harvey, Kinetico) use no electricity. The system pays for itself within 2–3 years through reduced energy bills, extended equipment life, and fewer descaling/cleaning products.
Where does a water softener fit?
Most domestic softeners are designed to fit under the kitchen sink or in a utility cupboard. Typical dimensions are roughly 500mm × 250mm × 500mm. We survey the incoming mains position and drainage access before specifying the unit.
Is softened water safe to drink?
Softened water is safe to drink for most people. However, it has slightly elevated sodium levels, so we always install a separate unsoftened drinking water tap at the kitchen sink. This is standard practice and required by Water Fittings Regulations for properties with occupants on sodium-restricted diets.
What's the difference between a softener and a scale inhibitor?
A water softener removes calcium and magnesium ions entirely — 100% limescale elimination. A scale inhibitor (electronic, magnetic, or TAC) alters the crystal structure of minerals so they don't adhere to surfaces — significant reduction but not elimination. Softeners cost more (£800–2,500) but offer complete protection. Inhibitors are cheaper (£150–800) and suit budget-conscious clients or properties where a softener won't fit.
Do you install water softeners as part of a heat pump package?
Yes — every heat pump installation we deliver includes a water quality assessment as standard. Where hardness exceeds 200 ppm (virtually all of London), we specify and install scale protection as part of the package. MCS MIS 3005 requires this, and most heat pump manufacturers require it for warranty validity.
